I Write Like I Paint
My paintbrushes and pencils live in the same old mason jar.
I feel for their worn out bristles and dull graphite edges. Do I come on too strong?
I write like I paint:
and to clarify, I paint rough.
My lines are jagged and sketchy—
What one could call a “trust the process” moment.
My family says I infect the house.
(They are probably referring to the many tables stained with oils and pastels and scratches.)
Maybe they mean the stacks of books and rough drafts.
Alas, no canvas or paper shall be safe from me.
Yes, there will be lines, dashes, scathing scratches, line breaks, spilled paint, paper gashes.
And I’m proud
I write like I paint.
